Years ago, I was given a wonderful book, titled “Makers of distinguish”. It’s something that I’ve read many times over, and there’s one particular passage that really stands out to me:

“Good tailoring depends on good measurement”, said the great craftsman, Eric Gill, “and for that, the tailor and his customer must meet”. The ground upon which they meet is perhaps most expressive of everything for which the made-to-order draft trades stand and for this reason, the pursuit of the craftsman may start in Savile Row.

In the heart of London’s Mayfair – everyone’s favourite square on the Monopoly board - Savile Row has long been synonymous with the pinnacle of bespoke tailoring. For whatever reason I thought that Savile Row was spelled with two “l’s” – Saville, but as the book informed me, it was actually spelled “Savile”, which is the same spelling as the Savile Row suits I stock in my shop.

This book always reminds me of the quality and integrity of those suits, and the heritage in tailoring that they represent.

Savile Row suits are made in China, and not in Mayfair. This move was initiated about 15 years ago to bring prices into reality and appeal to a broader market. However, despite the change in manufacturing location, these suits still uphold traditional English methods of fitting and cutting. Use time to declutter
While we are all staying safe at home, it is time to declutter that wardrobe. Go through and put aside the pieces you no longer wear, either pass it on to family or friends, or donate the items to a charity such as the Salvation Army.
Keep your favourites at hand

Do you have a quality suit sitting in your closet that no longer fits? When this situation arises, the difference between passing the suit onto someone else, or keeping it depends on whether your tailor can complete the required suit alterations to make them fit you well.

So, what can be altered in a suit?

Firstly, altering a suit to be smaller is doable, but you can’t necessarily always make something bigger, at least not by much. Exactly how much depends on what allowances of extra material are under the seams or hems of the garments.

However, tailored suit jackets and pants that were originally well made, in particular bespoke and made to measure , will likely contain more allowances, to future-proof for change of size, ensuring longevity.

When purchasing ready-to-wear items, they usually have little or no extra material to let out, as a means of keeping the prices down. Therefore, you will have a higher chance for a successful alteration if you purchase a suit that is a bit too big rather than too small for you.

With that said, there are also limitations in making garments smaller. Suit jackets are complex in construction and can’t simply be shrunken down multiple sizes. This is because the proportions will be altered, and the complete structure, including lining, padding and pockets, will have to be reconstructed to the point that it will be more most effective to purchase a new jacket. Suit jackets should only be altered down two sizes at most, however, a suit jacket only one size too large is the safer option.

Trousers are usually easier to alter. While legs can be made to be narrower, length can be taken up, and waistbands taken in, the rise of a pair of pants (the distance between the waistband and crotch), is harder to alter.

Each person is different and goes through various bodily changes throughout their lifetime. It is worth the extra investment with a made to measure or bespoke tailored suit to ensure longevity and guarantee that alterations can be made in the future.

How Suits Have Changed Over Time

A well-made suit is an important component of men’s formal wear. Whether you are attending a wedding, job interview, business meeting, or any other formal occasion, it is custom for a man to wear a well-designed suit. Suits typically consist of trousers with a matching jacket and necktie. However, the traditional suit has evolved over the years, and the suits you see today differ from those made in the past.

The 19th Century

Although historians deem that suits have been around in the United Kingdom (UK) since the 17th century, it was not until the 19th century that the modern lounge suit appeared. It was George Bryan “Beau” Brummel, a friend of King George IV who established the suit style. This began the trend where European men would wear tailored, high-quality suits with neckties. These suits were tight fitting and usually featured a dark frock coat with light, non-matching trousers – quite different to the suits you generally see today.

The 20th Century

The 20th Century is when the suit began to evolve. Men were no longer wearing frock coats, instead they would wear morning coats with their suits. A morning coat is a formal suit coat this is distinguished by the cutaway in the back. From the back of a morning coat, you will see the left and right sides of the fabric are split from each other. Due to this unique stylish feature, many men in the UK and elsewhere started to wear a morning coat with their suits instead of the traditional frock coat.

The Short-Coated Lounge Suit

Following the end of the first World War saw further changes to suits. One significant change was a rising popularity and demand for short jacket suits. Also identified as the short-coated lounge suit, it became very popular around the 1920s, and has remained in fashion to this day.

The Modernisation of Suits

In the 1940s and 1950s suit styles began to modernise. The style slowly developed to the kind of suits we see sold and worn today. Lapels begun to shrink, men started wearing single-breasted jackets, and the jackets were designed straight to conceal the waistline. One of the main reasons for these changes was due to the lack of resources as many countries were engaged in World War II. Thus, rather than using fabrics and resources to make suits, they were being used to create military uniforms and other items.

The Modern-day Suit

Not only has the style of the suit evolved throughout history, but the fabrics used to make men’s suits has also changed. Originally, most suits were made of cotton, linen, or other similar textiles. Suits are still currently manufactured and sold in these fabrics, however there are now more options to choose from. Popular suit textiles now include tweed, linen, cotton, wool, corduroy, and velvet.

Additionally, suit colours have also changed over the years. The most popular suit colour being black, however, men’s suits are available in countless of other colours, including brown, grey, navy, white and more.

So, without further ado, here are our top tips on how to look after your suit:

Wear Your Suit Appropriately
A suit should never be worn more than twice a week. Make sure that you are rotating your suits to ensure longevity. When investing in a made to measure or bespoke tailored suit for work, wear them appropriately and only for the occasion you tailor made your suit for.
Store Your Suit on A Hanger
After a long day at work, it could be tempting to take off your suit and throw it on a chair – however, it is important to avoid this. Once you finish wearing your suit, store it on a hanger with a nice shoulder line for the suit jacket to drape perfectly over. Place some cedar balls in your wardrobe to keep moths away.
Spot Clean with a Damp
Cloth Stains are inevitable no matter how careful you are. If you spill food or wine on your suit, spring into action with a spot clean. Gently dab the spot with a damp cloth. If you are unable to remove the stain after a few tries, hand it over to the professionals.
